Scholarship Scheme for the Girls Students of Kohistan District

Kohistan is the most backward district of NWFP. Female literacy is just 3% which is the lowest in NWFP. The District is also notorious for ghost and non-functional schools. Availability of local female teachers is non-existent and non-local teachers either remain absent or try to get out of Kohistan on first opportunity.

This issue can only be resolved if we succeed to prepare a batch of local matriculate girls. Elementary Education Foundation, after assessing the situation, adopted an innovative approach. Contacts were made with the local Community. After exhaustive briefings and motivation ice was finally broken despite the fact that the area is known for conservative cultural values.

In April 2004 scholarship scheme was launched. As a result 10 female students have been admitted in class 6 in Mingora, Swat District.

Elementary Education Foundation is not only paying hostel charges but also Rs. 150 per month per student as pocket money.
