ELEMENTARY EDUCATION FOUNDATION

Elementary Education Foundation was established under “The North West Frontier Province Elementary Education Foundation Ordinance, 2002” It is a body-corporate. The management has been vested in the Board of Directors headed by the Chief Minister NWFP. While Minister of Education is the vice-chairman of Board of Directors. LITERACY FOR ALL(LFA) PROJECT GOVT OF NWFP

Literacy For All ( LFA ) Project is designed to achieve 50% adult literacy by the year 2015. With 60% net enrollment (2004 estimates) every year 0.25 to 0.3 million children remain illiterate and enter into age group of 10—19 years of age which means permanent ineligibility for formal school system. Currently there are3 million illiterates in the age group of 10—20 years of age By the year 2015, with an estimated population of 28 million and, with current rate of 1 % annual improvement in literacy we can only attain 50% overall literacy which means still some 8 million illiterates in the age-group of 10—39 years of age Primary target group of LFA Project (10 – 19 years) of age constitutes 25 % having 3.5 millions illiterates.

Literacy For All (LFA) Project has established 47,609 Literacy Centers(LCs) and 0.125 illiterates made literate in the last 9 batches as in the table below:

Community Schools

Female literacy in NWFP is just 20% as compared to 56% male average. In eight districts of NWFP, out of total number of 24, the male to female literacy ratio is 5:1 and above. In a backward Province like NWFP it would take decades to achieve even gender equality. As a signatory to the World Education Forum Dakar (2000) Pakistan is supposed to achieve gender equality in education by the year 2015. It has also been envisaged that all the children, with special emphasis on girls, have access to and complete free and compulsory education of good quality by the year 2015. more...
